Refreshments – need a place to store materials or donate them to the food bank – have 1 week to pick up or will donate.

Gary Smith’s presentation: “iMovie on the iPad”

The iPad has 25-30% of the functionality available on the iMac; mouse-driven interfaces result in lower precision compared to touch screens.

Moviemaking = telling a story, beginning, middle, end; storyboarding to envision the scenes; pages storyboard template; name, date, panels with text reference and action for each scene; not shot in sequence for continuity.

Topic: eradicate scotch broom.

Script: dialogue overview, then go back and get sub-scenes; two-part dialogue for the actor to read; iterative process.

Filmed with an iPhone and a tripod, set up a script so can read cue cards.

Handheld technique vs. Steadicam to smooth motion.

IMovie app = star icon; project page, video page with iMovie library of clips, hooks into photos (resource files); can sort and preview; theater is where export final project; video formats .nts for video cams; .mov for Apple (cannot change on iPad but can on iMac; iPad picks a frame at the midpoint of the movie; can change this on iMac.

Projects New – select media (default to Photos moments, can select videos); one panel to drag clip to and use vertical white bar

Works sequentially, select clip and check; scroll to preview or play; transition between clips – from none to jump to next clip; options in timeline for various transitions, comes with sound effects or use clip sounds; dissolve to blend .5-2.0 seconds; slide; wipe; fade (to black); pick a type of transition and keep it consistent unless have a reason to differentiate; dissolve transition is common.

Operation on active clip within yellow handles: actions, speed, volume, titles, filters.

Actions: split, detach audio (use with caution or lose alignment of audio with video).

Split to break the film and create a transition, and select no transition.

Can reorder, shorten, or lengthen.

Select a theme – simple, news, travel, neon, playful, bright, modern.

Theme: Controls transitions, background music, and filters.

Use to add audio and can change volume; background theme music mutes when clip has sound; can mute clip sound to get full volume theme audio.

Insert: media, clips select clip to add, select +; can undo in preview.

Can toggle audio waveform on and off.

White bar location determines where the clip is added.

Can add a static photo and set the number of frames it will appear.

Different options appear for static photos; Ken Burns effect = technique to zoom and pan over the photo; submenu to enable or disable this effect.

Pinch to position.

Text in image editing, then bring it in.

Can duplicate still photos.

Titles and filters.

Voiceover using a microphone; red button to record, can modify volume.

Real-time video to add to clip = accept all, then modify.

Ways to create sounds.

Hard to record off the computer.

A camera and a microphone to record on an iPad.

Titles to superimpose text over video.

Timelines: theme, video, audio, title.

Each clip gets 1 title – select T and get 10 titles, animated, autosize to fit.

Everything gets a title, may have a title of None.

2 positions: center and lower.

Prism, twist.

Effects at the beginning and end of the clip.

Filters – change for duration of clip or none.

Can get things from iCloud.

Can get albums.

? = help and puts names for each icon.

Can adjust speed – tortoise and rabbit icons.

Can split background music.

It can be reset when dragged and dropped to get back to the start.

Review, then select Done

Can save as by selecting share – e.g., theater.

Movies are large files – you can see details when synced to an iMac.

Can use a blank static photo for Titles.
